Wow! What a way to finish out our 2018 House Concert season! I shouldn’t have to introduce this gentleman to anyone on the mailing list.
Frankie Gavin has been a major force in Irish Traditional Music on both fiddle and flute for nearly 50 years. His name is synonymous with the band De Dannan, which he founded as a teenager. De Dannan is still one of the biggest names in Irish music, and Frankie still plays with them today. But he has a lot more to his name than just the band. Frankie has played for four U.S. presidents, from JFK (when Frankie was just 7 years old) to Barack Obama!
Frankie has played with everybody from the Rolling Stones, to Elvis Costello, Earl Scruggs, and Yehudi Menhuin. Yet he still has a heart that beats to the rhythm of the traditional music. This will be a rare chance to see an icon of the music in such a humble surrounding!
Joining Frankie for this show will also be Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello!
Tommy was born and raised in the Irish Traditional Music scene in London. He grew up playing with such greats as Roger Sherlock, Paddy Taylor, and Bobby Casey!
Louise hails from Galway, and credits De Dannan’s original banjo player, Charlie Piggot, as a major influence on her playing.
Tommy and Louise met in 1987, playing music around the Boston trad scene. And together, they now own one of the most renowned trad music pubs in the U.S., The Burren, in Somerville, Mass. They have performed with many of the greats. They, of course, both appear on the iconic McCarthy Family Album, and in 2014 released a duo album titled Grace Bay.
