This show has been a long time coming! I have had Gerry booked twice before, but both times, other things came up, and we ended up canceling the shows. This time, we were able to bring Gerry to Colorado in between gigs at O’Flaherty, and the Austin Celtic Fest, so it is going to happen!
Gerry is one of my all time favorite fiddlers! He hails from Dundalk, County Louth and is the product of four generations of fiddle players. His recordings have focused strongly on local music, and his work as a soloist and as a band member of Lá Lugh and Skylark is well-known worldwide. Over the past two decades, he has recorded 15 albums and performed with all the leading performers of the Irish music industry, including members of the Chieftains, Boys of the Lough, Planxty, De Dannan and Bothy Band. His solo album Journeyman has been hailed as one of the most significant albums of Irish fiddle music in recent times.
At home, Gerry works as a violin maker, music teacher, and music producer, and currently tours with the Canadian Irish legends, The Irish Rovers. He is a four-time winner of the Fiddler of Oriel and regularly adjudicates the competition!
Many of you are already familiar with Don Penzien, as he was here accompanying Hailey Richardson last year! Don has long been a top-flight performer of Irish traditional music. He frequently is on the road playing concerts and festivals with Gerry, Haley, Brian Conway, or Sean Gavin, and he has served as accompanist for countless other well-known Irish performers. Widely recognized for his reserved backing style, Don’s dexterous work on DADGAD-tuned guitar provides solid, driving rhythms to traditional tunes as well as perceptive and sensitive accompaniments to songs and airs.
